Hoboken, NJ – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team swept a pair of matches on the second day of the Empire 8 Crossover hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. The Soaring Eagles downed Hartwick College 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-20) to open the day and took down rival Ithaca College 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-16) in its afternoon match. With the wins EC moves above .500 with a 10-9 record overall and now sit at 5-1 in Empire 8 competition.
The Purple and Gold hit an incredible .468 compared to just .013 for Hartwick in its first match of the day. Elmira finished with 26 kills and only four errors against the Hawks. The team used a balanced attack to get by Hartwick.
Sasha Zavadska '13 led the way with 12 kills and eight digs. Meanwhile,
Taryn Rumsey '14,
Ashley Heiman '16 and
Amanda Matson '13 led the Soaring Eagles with 8, 7 and 6 kills, respectively.
Rumsey added five digs, while
Heiman recorded four blocks.
Molly Short '13 dished out a match-high 28 assists.
Elmira continued its success in its second match against Ithaca continuing to hit well, while playing exceptional defense, both in the backcourt and at net. EC hit .306 compared to a .074 mark for the Bombers.
Rumsey finished with 16 kills and eight digs, hitting .371.
Zavadska added a double-double with 11 kills, 12 assists, and four service aces, while hitting .400.
Matson continued her hot play with eight kills and four blocks, while
Catherine Miller '14
added 10 digs.
Short finished with a match-high 29 assists and added eight digs and three blocks. As a team the Soaring Eagles were a force at net combining for 15 total blocks.
After two weekends of Empire 8 conference play Elmira sits in second place at 5-1. They trail only undefeated Nazareth who is 5-0. Stevens is right on EC's heels at 4-1. However, with the win on Friday EC holds a tiebreak advantage over the Ducks. Below you can see the updated conference standings.
