Box Score
Utica, NY – The Elmira College Men's Soccer team fell 5-0 in the semifinal of the Empire 8 Tournament against No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology Friday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The win improves the Ducks to 16-2, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 12-6.
Stevens got the scoring started just 2:10 into the contest. Zeke Hemme fed a ball up to Stephen Dunbar who was all alone and finished past EC keeper
Kevin Huggins '16 (Cooperstown, NY -- Cooperstown) for the early 1-0 lead. The Ducks controlled a majority of opportunities throughout the first half. Elmira made some good connecting passes into the offensive third but could not convert any of its five shot attempts into scores. With just over a minute remaining in the opening half Stevens struck again when Zach Adler fed Joe Cellitti who flipped the ball over the Elmira keeper. The Ducks held a 9-5 shots and 7-4 shots on goal advantage and took a 2-0 edge on the scoreboard into intermission.
The Ducks tacked on a third goal in the 53rd minute when Victor Daza stuck with a ball between several EC defenders and slide tackled a shot from outside the box on net that trickled between the legs of
Huggins. Four minutes later Stevens scored again after
Huggins made a terrific initial save on Adler's shot. However, the rebound came directly to Cellitti who one-touched the ball to Adler who knocked it in for the 4-0 lead. At the 59:06 mark the Ducks added on yet another score when Daza tallied his team-leading 12th score of the year on a chip shot off a pass from Cellitti.
Overall in the contest the Ducks held advantages in shots (22-9) and shots on goal (15-6). Daza led Stevens with two goals, while Adler and Cellitti each tallied a score and assist.
Huggins made seven saves in 68 minutes, before
Jordan Dougherty '16 (Reading, PA -- Muhlenberg) replaced him for the remainder of the contest stopping three shots. Paul Killian made four saves over 77 minutes for Stevens and Brian Schaake stepped in for the final 12 minutes stopping two shots.
Stevens advances on to the Empire 8 Championship to take on the winner of St. John Fisher and Ithaca, while Elmira will wait to see about a possible ECAC postseason berth.
