Elmira, NY – The EC Women's Volleyball team was able to dictate play Wednesday evening and beat out the Gators of Sage College, 3-1 (25-14, 25-14, 16-25, 25-21), in an ECAC Championship Quarterfinal match-up at the Speidel Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles improve to 22-12 overall, while the Gators fall to 20-13 overall.

In the first set the Gators played tough and stayed with the Soaring Eagles for the beginning. Midway through the EC offense kicked in stretching its lead to 19-13 and eventually going on a 6-1 run to end the set 25-14. In the second set Elmira took an early lead with Sage fighting back to keep it close. After the score was 8-7 Francene Cicia '13, Sasha Zavadska '13, Taryn Rumsey '14 and Amanda Matson '13 stepped up big for the Soaring Eagles helping the team go on a 13-3 run to stretch out the lead. EC continued to dominate and ultimately closed out the second set 25-14.

In the third set the Gators controlled the tempo early and had the Soaring Eagles on their heels. Although EC would fight back to bring it within two points, 18-16, the Gators went on a 7-0 run to end the set 25-16. In set four both teams continued to make key plays and go point for point against each other. After the set was tied at 17 the Soaring Eagle veterans went back to the basics and closed it out 25-21.  

Matson played phenomenal for the Soaring Eagles hitting an unbelievable 61.5% and recording 16 kills with no errors. Zavadska and Rumsey also played well combining for 27 kills and 22 digs, while Molly Short '13 contributed 44 assists and 10 digs. Helen Putriment was the star for the Gators recording 11 kills and 20 digs, while sisters Kelsey Ray and Kera Ray also contributed to the offense combining for eight kills, two aces, 10 digs and four total blocks. 

The Purple and Gold will return to action Saturday, November 10th when it plays in the Semifinal rounds of the ECAC Championships.
