Men’s Hockey Struggles to Complete Comeback Against Fredonia State

Fredonia, NY – The Elmira College Men's Hockey team went down early and struggled to complete the comeback falling, 4-2, to Fredonia State University Friday evening. The win improves the Blue Devils to 5-6 overall, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 4-6 overall.

The first period of play went back and forth with neither team able to get many advantages on the offensive side. The Blue Devils were able to outshoot the Soaring Eagles in the period 10-8, while the EC offense could not convert on its two opening power play opportunities.

Fredonia was able to break open the game in the second period with two scores at the 6:14 and 10:04 marks by Taylor Bourne. About two minutes later the Blue Devils added to their lead when Stephen Castriota scored the shorthanded and game winning goal.

In the final period of action the Soaring Eagles were able to fight back and score two goals of their own. At the 10:16 mark Taylor Love '16 passed it out to Greg Whittle '16 who registered EC's first goal of the game. At the 14:01 mark Brian Depp '16 registered the team's second goal of the game on a power play with Tommy Sumi '16 and Jesper Strale '14 recording assists. In the closing 20 seconds of the game EC pulled goaltender Darren MacDonald '13 to get an extra man on the ice, but Fredonia was able to get the puck late and register an empty net goal with one second left to secure the victory. MacDonald played in net for EC recording 25 saves, while Mark Friesen played in net for Fredonia making 24 saves.

The Soaring Eagles will return to action tomorrow when they host the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils at the Murray Athletic Center starting at 7:00 p.m.
