Hoboken, NJ – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team won its first two matches on the opening day of the UVC Crossover held in Hoboken, NJ on Saturday afternoon. EC dominated both matches beating Bard College 3-1 (25-15, 25-16, 19-25, 25-15) and SUNY Institute of Technology 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-11). With the two wins the Soaring Eagles improve to 11-5 overall on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
In its first match against Bard, EC dominated the match, winning the first two sets handily. Bard fought back in the third set and won the set to try to start a comeback. However, the Soaring Eagles held off the Raptors and closed out the match to win its first conference match of the new season. Against SUNY IT, the Purple and Gold continued its dominance winning easily in three sets.
Mike Stianche '15 (Bethlehem, PA -- Bethlehem Catholic) led the Soaring Eagles with 12 kills, six assists, four digs and four blocks.
Ryan Gelenitis '14 (Brick, NJ -- Christian Brothers Academy) contributed eight kills, 10 aces, six digs and four blocks.
Michael Vellutato '14 (Topanga, CA -- Redondo Union), Eric Sandmann '14 (Glennville, NY -- Burnt Hills) and
Chris Pierantoni '15 (Maspeth, NY -- St. Francis Prep) also played well helping the Soaring Eagles win both matches.
Vellutato tallied 57 assists, four digs and two blocks.
Sandmann recorded 11 kills and five digs, while
Pierantoni contributed eight kills, two digs and two blocks.
The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team returns to action tomorrow for Day 2 of the UVC Crossover when they play Vassar College at Noon.
