Women’s Hockey Loses a Heartbreaker to RIT

Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Women's Ice Hockey team lost a heartbreaker in the final period to Rochester Institute of Technology, 2 -1, on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Tigers to 21-1-1 overall and 13-1-1 in ECAC West play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 18-4-1 overall and 13-3-0 in conference competition.

In the first period RIT came out strong once again scoring the game's first goal at the 8:59 mark of the first period on a power play with Kourtney Kunichika just beating EC goalie Lisa Marshall '14 (Powhatan, VA -- Wayne State University) on the stick side. Kristina Moss and Emilee Bulleid tallied assists on the score. However, a little over three minutes later EC responded, knotting the game at one all. Lindsay Mitchell '12 (Arnold, MD -- NAHA) took the puck off the board and passed it up to Tori Charron '14 (Goodwood, ONT -- Aurora Panthers).  Charron played the puck to Caitlin Metcalf '13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge School for Athletes) who beat RIT goaltender Laura Chamberlain to the glove side. The two teams went into the locker rooms after the first period tied at one.

In the second period both teams looked to capitalize on possible scoring opportunities, but neither goalie would let in a score. The game stayed scoreless until the 17:58 mark of the third period where RIT took the lead. Kim Schlattman scored the power play goal with Kristina Moss and Kolbee McCrea assisting on the play. The game remained a fight until the very end with Charron and Ashley Ryan '15 (North Chili, NY -- Rochester Edge) getting some opportunities to shoot, but neither player could score the game-tying goal.
Marshall played tough in net making 19 saves, while Chamberlain recorded 34 saves between the pipes for the Tigers.

The Purple and Gold return to action Friday, February 18 and Saturday, February 19 at home against the Oswego State Lakers in its final conference games of the season.
