Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team swept visiting Hilbert College 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-13) Wednesday evening in UVC conference action at Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 15-9 overall and 5-2 in conference competition, while the loss drops the Hawks to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in UVC play.
EC got off to a quick 9-2 start early in the first set and led by as many as 12 points. Hilbert hung in, but Elmira eventually cruised to a 25-16 victory. The second set proved to be a bit tighter with the Soaring Eagles separating themselves late for a 25-17 win. EC got out to a 16-8 lead in the third set looking to sweep the Hawks. The Purple and Gold pulled it out easily in the third set, cruising, 25-13.
Eric Sandmann '14 (Glenville, NY -- Burnt Hills) and
Austin Sanderl '15 (Pittsford, NY -- Rush Henrietta) led Elmira with nine and eight kills, respectively.
Sandmann hit a team-high .692 and added four digs and three blocks.
Michael Vellutato '14 (Topanga, CA -- Redondo Union) paced the Soaring Eagle attack with 23 assists and three blocks.
EC returns to action March 10th and 11th when it travels to Nazareth for a UVC Crossover weekend. The Purple and Gold's first match is against Stevens Institute of Technology at 9:00 a.m on March 10th.
