Women’s Basketball Drops Tight Contest at Hartwick

Oneonta, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team was held scoreless for the last three minutes of play as it fell, 59-52, on the road Saturday afternoon at Lambros Arena. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 8-14 overall and 4-7 in Empire 8 play, while the win improves the Hawks to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in conference competition.
 
The two teams played pretty evenly throughout the first half until Hartwick went on a 10-2 run in the final three and a half minutes to take a 33-23 lead into intermission. Jessica Zoltowski '14 (Erie, PA -- Harbor Creek) led the Soaring Eagles with nine points in the opening frame.
 
Hartwick led 46-35 with just over 11 minutes remaining, but the Purple and Gold proved tough battling all the way back, using a 17-4 run to reclaim the lead at 52-50, with just under four minutes to play. However, EC was held scoreless the final 3:41 as the Hawk defense tightened up, allowing them to escape with a 59-52 victory.
 
Zoltowski led Elmira with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Alex Balara '15 (Marlton, NJ -- Gloucester Catholic) tallied her first career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 boards along with four steals. Maria Thannhauser '14 (Newfield, NY -- Newfield) added 12 in the scoring column for EC. Maria Foglia led the Hawks with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Kate Purcell and Carlee Hirt chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Elmira College Women's Basketball team returns to action Friday when they host Ithaca College at 6:00 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium, which kicks off Athletic Alumni Weekend.
