Men's Volleyball Set for UVC Playoffs

Rochester, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team has earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming United Volleyball Conference Playoffs. The Soaring Eagles will take on No. 3 seeded Medaille College Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at New York University. NYU, who earned the one seed, will host the entire weekend of the UVC playoffs.
 
No. 14 nationally-ranked EC ends the regular season 22-16 overall and 6-5 in conference competition, while No. 10 nationally-ranked Medaille is 22-8 overall and 8-3 in UVC play. The Purple and Gold have played the Mavericks once this season as the two teams met March 21st in Elmira with Medaille prevailing 3-1 (19-25, 19-25, 28-26, 16-25). EC fell behind in that match 2-0, before rallying to win the third set, 28-26. The Soaring Eagles couldn't quite muster a comeback as they fell in the fourth set, 16-25.

EC is led this season by a pair of players who have already eclipsed the 300 kill mark. Second year outside hitter Ryan Gelenitis '14 (Brick, NJ -- Christian Brothers Academy) has pounded out a team-high 397 kills (2.98 per set), while rookie Mike Stianche '15 (Bethlehem, PA -- Bethlehem Catholic) has tallied 368 kills (3.12 per set). Michael Vellutato '14 (Topanga, CA -- Redondo Union) has proved to be the catalyst offensively, dishing out 1,326 assists (9.68 per set), while second year Ryan Nerney '14 (Niskayuna, NY -- Niskayuna) and seven footer Ladislav Lelkes '15 (Bratislava, SVK -- Esprit) have recorded 84 (0.65 per set) and 83 blocks (0.65 per set), respectively. Defensively rookie Nick Scalia '15 (Huntingdon, PA -- Huntingdon) has tallied a team-high 265 digs (2.12 per set), while Gelenitis leads the team pinpointing 49 service aces.
 
Nick Johnson and Kelly Erin lead Medaille in kills with 327 (3.44 per set) and 279 (2.79 per set), respectively. Aaron Woomer sets up the offense, dishing out 737 assists (8.77 per set). Brandon Kilijanski provides a spark for the Mavericks defensively tallying 303 digs (3.09 per set), while Erin Kelly leads the team with 59 blocks (0.75 per set).
