Valverde Scores Two Goals Late to Help Men’s Soccer Remain Undefeated

Elmira, NY – Ernesto Valverde '14 scored two goals late in the second half to help the EC Men's Soccer team win 2-1 over Cazenovia College Tuesday afternoon on Campus Field. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 4-0, while the loss drops the Wildcats to 2-3.
 
Elmira had complete control in the first half getting plenty of opportunities for offense. Although they would outshoot the Wildcats 16-6 in the first, EC could not get on the board. The score going into halftime was tied at zero, but both teams went into the locker room determined to get an edge.
 
The Wildcats came out firing in the second half taking advantage of its offensive opportunities. After a mishap by the Elmira defense in the 54th minute, Gregorie Ducasse took the ball and put it right past Kevin Huggins '16 for the 1-0 lead. The Soaring Eagles did not count themselves out and went right back to work on both ends of the field. In the 78th minute, EC was able to tie up the game with Tre Ming '16 making a magnificent cross to Valverde who put it in the back of the net. Later Valverde would get another chance to score after a Cazenovia foul inside the goalie's box. He received a penalty kick shot and scored the game winner.
 
Valverde led both teams with five shots on goal and four points, while Ming was right behind with two shots on goal and one assist. Huggins played all game in net for EC and ended with one save, while Riley Battaglini played in net for Cazenovia and ended with 10 saves.
 
The Purple and Gold return to action Saturday when they travel to Alfred University in their first conference battle of the 2012 season. Game is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
