Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Fisher to Start Conference Play

Alfred, NY – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team started off conference competition with a bang, disposing of St. John Fisher College 3-0 (26-24, 25-9, 25-16) Friday evening on Day 1 of the Empire 8 Crossover Weekend hosted by Alfred University. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Cardinals to 1-10 overall and 0-1 in conference.

The two teams played a tight opening set back-and-forth as EC prevailed late, 26-24. The Purple and Gold carried this momentum into the second set as they dismantled Fisher, 25-9, to take control of the match. Elmira closed out its first Empire 8 match of the season winning, 25-16. Overall in the match the Soaring Eagles finished with 40 kills to just 12 errors, good for a .247 hitting percentage.

Sasha Zavadska '13 led the way with a double-double pounding out 12 kills to go along with 16 digs. Taryn Rumsey '14 also finished with double digit kills with 12. Molly Short '13 returned from injury to dish out a team-high 31 assists and added 12 digs. Meanwhile, Francene Cicia and Catherine Miller '14 tallied 14 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Soaring Eagles return to action tomorrow when they square off against Utica College at 10:00 a.m., followed by a rematch of the 2011 Empire 8 Championship with Nazareth College at 12:30 p.m.
