Box Score 2 Alfred, NY – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball split on day two of the Empire 8 Crossover as they swept Utica College 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-17) and fell in a tight four setter to Nazareth 3-1 (26-28, 26-24, 12-25, 21-25) Saturday in Alfred. The split moves the Soaring Eagles to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in Empire 8 play.
EC got off to a quick start playing extremely well as a team as they outhit Utica .378 to .145 in their first match. The Soaring Eagles gave up just 23 points in the first two sets combined to take control of the match 2-0, and closed the Pioneers out 25-17 in the third.
Sasha Zavadska '13
paced the Soaring Eagles with 15 kills and 17 digs, while
Taryn Rumsey '14 tallied a team-high 16 kills along with nine digs.
Molly Short '13 dished out 34 assists and recorded seven digs. Meanwhile,
Francene Cicia '13 pinpointed a team-high four service aces along with 11 digs.
Catherine Miller '14
added three aces, while
Amanda Matson '13
pounded out eight kills.
In match two of the day EC dropped a hard fought opening set to Nazareth 28-26, but battled back in the second to take an equally close set, 26-24. The Golden Flyers dominated in the third set cruising 25-12. The Soaring Eagles responded well in the fourth set, but got nipped late 25-21, as it dropped its first conference match of the season.
Rumsey led EC with a double-double finishing with 12 kills and 12 digs, while
Zavadska added a team-high 18 kills.
Short finished with five kills and 32 assists, while
Cicia added another three aces and seven digs.
The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team returns to action Friday at the Stevens Tournament when it takes on Baruch at 6:00 p.m. and Stockton at 8:00 p.m. in Hoboken, NJ.
