Pittsford, NY – The Elmira College Men's Soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit as it fell for the first time this season, 3-0, Saturday afternoon on the road at St. John Fisher. The win improves the Cardinals to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference competition, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8.
The Purple and Gold came into today's contest as the highest scoring team in the nation, averaging 4.71 goals per game and were just one of six remaining undefeated teams out of 413 Division III schools.
Fisher controlled a majority of possession in the game outshooting EC 17-11 in the contest, including 10-5 in the second half. The Cardinals got the scoring started in the 21st minute when Austin Buckley fed a pass to Josh Tomko who beat Elmira keeper
Jordan Dougherty '16 (Reading, PA -- Muhlenberg) in the lower right corner. Neither team could find the back of the net for the next 50 minutes of game time, as Fisher took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals added two insurance goals in a five minute span just more than halfway through the second stanza. Early in the 71st minute Buckley was the catalyst again as he juked an Elmira defender and found Jake Quattrini in front of the net who made it 2-0. Six minutes later Nick Calo dished a pass to Joel Castellini who nailed it in the back of the net for the eventual final score of 3-0.
Dougherty made five saves in the loss for Elmira, while Kyle Metcalfe stopped three shots for Fisher.
The Soaring Eagles continue their road trip Monday when they take on SUNY Canton in a night contest starting at 7:00 p.m.
