Women’s Volleyball Spikes Past Panthers

Box Score Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team cruised in its season opener, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-16), past visiting University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 1-0, while the loss drops the Panthers to 0-5.

EC got off to a fast start outplaying Pitt Bradford to a 25-18 first set. The Purple and Gold continued to surge into the second set disposing of the Panthers 25-15. Elmira used an impressive hitting percentage with very few errors in the match to close out the contest 25-16 in the third.

Reigning two-time Empire 8 Player of the Year Sasha Zavadska '13 paced the attack with 15 kills, 10 digs, and just three errors. Taryn Rumsey '14 chipped in with 13 kills, 10 digs, and only two mishits, while Amanda Matson '13 added an impressive seven kills without a single error. Classmate Molly Short '13 proved to be the catalyst offensively for EC, dishing out a match-high 33 assists and adding 10 digs. Francene Cicia '13 notched 10 digs and two service aces. 

The Purple and Gold return to action this weekend when they host the EC Invitational Friday and Saturday in Speidel Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles take on Wells Friday at 4:00 p.m. followed by an 8:00 p.m. nightcap against the Rochester Institute of Technology.
