Seniors Lead Women’s Volleyball on Opening Night of EC Invitational

EC Downs Wells 3-0 and RIT 3-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team's five members of the Class of 2013 helped them get off to a solid start in its own tournament as they defeated Wells 3-0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-13) and Rochester Institute of Technology 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20). The wins improve the Soaring Eagles to 3-0 on the season.

The Purple and Gold got out of the gates quickly against Wells getting off to a 19-8 lead before closing with six straight points to take the first set 25-8. The Express proved to be a tougher match in the second set leading 14-13 at one point, but EC outscored Wells 12-5 down the stretch to prevail 25-19. The third set was all the Soaring Eagles as they started the final stanza 15-8 and cruised, winning 25-13.

Amanda Matson '13 led the Purple and Gold with 10 kills on her way to a perfect hitting percentage. Sasha Zavadska '13 pounded out a match-high 17 kills along with six digs. Molly Short '13 paced the passing game for EC dishing out 31 assists and adding five digs. Classmates Melanie Pershyn '13 and Francene Cicia '13 added six digs apiece.

Elmira's second match of the night pitted a battle between a former conference foe in RIT. The teams attacked back and forth without much separation as it was tied 13-13 midway through the opening frame. The Tigers took a 19-16 lead before head coach Rhonda Faunce called time out. The Purple and Gold responded scoring six straight points to take a 22-19 lead behind the service game of Taryn Rumsey '14 and held on to take the first set 25-22.

The second set proved to be close as well with EC leading 22-19 before scoring three straight points to close it out 25-19. The Purple and Gold hoped to win a back-and-forth third set as the teams were tied 16 all, 19 all, and 21 all before the Tigers scored four of the final five points to take the game 25-22, forcing a fourth set. The final frame would prove to be another close one as Elmira led 23-20 late and held on to close out the match 25-20.

Zavadska led Elmira once again this time with a double-double finishing with 21 kills, 14 digs, and five service aces, while hitting .302. Rumsey added 15 kills, nine digs and five aces, while Catherine Miller '14 recorded 11 digs. Short registered 35 assists and Cicia notched nine digs and a service ace.
 
The EC Women's Volleyball team returns to action tomorrow for Day 2 of the EC Invitational. The Soaring Eagles square off with the College at Brockport at 10:00 a.m. followed by a noon matchup with Houghton College.
