Houghton, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team trimmed a double-digit second half Houghton lead to just one point, but couldn't quite complete the comeback as they fell, 55-54, to host Houghton Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Highlanders to 8-5, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 5-9.
Houghton led 30-25 at intermission and extended that lead to as many as 11 points at 38-27 with 12:35 remaining in the contest. EC responded with a 5-0 mini run that brought the score within 38-32 a minute later. The Highlanders continued to lead by six points at 46-40 with 4:29 remaining. However, after a 7-2 run Elmira trailed by just one with 2:45 on the clock.
Houghton regained a six point lead with just 28 seconds to play. However,
Kelsey Geisler '15 hit a three-pointer and Elmira forced a turnover on the ensuing possession. With 15 seconds left
Jessica Zoltowski '14 laid it in to get within one. Kristen Moose made two clutch free throws with 12 seconds to extend Houghton's lead to three. With three seconds left a
Geisler three wouldn't go for the tie and
Maria Thannhauser '14 corralled the offensive rebound and scored for the 55-54 final.
Geisler paced EC with 16 points, while
Zoltowski added 12 as the only other Soaring Eagle in double figures. Moose finished with game-highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds for Houghton, while Kaitlin Hammersley added 13 points.
Elmira held a 24-10 points off turnovers advantage, while Houghton held a massive 49-20 edge on the boards that led to a 14-2 second chance points edge.
The Women's Basketball team returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Ithaca College in Speidel Gymnasium starting at 6:00 p.m.
