Men’s Hockey Falls Short of Comeback Against Hobart

Pine Valley, NY – The EC Men's Hockey team tried to make a comeback in the final period of play against Hobart College, but fell short in a 6-3 loss Saturday evening at the Murray Athletic Center. The fifth-ranked Statesmen improve to 16-2-2 overall and 8-1-1 in ECAC West action, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 8-12-0 overall and 3-7-0 in conference play.   

The Statesmen got on the scoreboard first with a goal with 8:49 left in the first. After the Soaring Eagles were called for a five minute major penalty, Brad McBride pushed in a shot from right in front after passes from Ryan Michel and Brad Richard. It was McBride's seventh goal this season. Elmira answered a little over two minutes later, capitalizing on a power play of its own. Eric David '15 found the back of the net at 13:26 after an assist from Jesper Strale '14 and D'Arcy Oakes '13.

The Statesmen came out strong in the second period, scoring three goals to extend their lead to 4-1. Just 29 seconds into the second period. Michel carried the puck around the goal and out in front, where he lifted a shot over the glove of Darren MacDonald '13 to give Hobart a 2-1 lead with his third tally of the season. Tommaso Traversa placed a shot into the top right corner to make it 3-1 at 5:48 in the second. It was his sixth goal of the year. Cam Miller and Tommy Fiorentino were credited with the assists.  At 8:12 in the second, Dave Stevens stretched Hobart's lead to three with his third goal this year. He scored from right in front after passes from Traversa and Brett Riley.

The Soaring Eagles came out scoring in the third with two quick goals to get within one. Mark Morikawa '13 made is 4-2 at 6:12 off assists from Steve Carlette '16 and Jordan Robertson '16. Taylor Love '16 blasted a shot from the blue line to make it 4-3 at 8:38 in the third. Rob Simpson '16 earned the assist.

Fiorentino put the Statesmen back on top by two at 11:56. He took a pass from Traversa and carried the puck into the zone, scoring on a backhanded shot from right in front. The Soaring Eagles pulled their goalie with just over a minute remaining for the extra skater, but could not take advantage. With 2.2 seconds on the clock, Mac Olson tallied his second empty net goal in as many days to cap the Hobart victory. Richard tallied the assist.
 
MacDonald played the first 28:12 and finished with 18 saves. Ryan deMelo '15 came in for the final 30:36 and stopped 14 shots. Lino Chimienti played all 60 minutes in his first collegiate start for the Statesmen and finished with 28 saves. The Statesmen finished with a 38-31 advantage in shots. Hobart went 1-for-3 on the power-play and Elmira finished 1-for-6.

The EC Men's Hockey team will return to action Friday, February 1st and Saturday, February 2nd against Nazareth College on Athletic Alumni Weekend. Friday's game will be played at Nazareth and will start at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's game will be played at the Murray Athletic Center and will start at 7:00 p.m.
