Alfred, NY – The EC Men's Basketball team battled well and kept it close, but could not hold off Alfred University falling, 68-64, Tuesday evening at McLane Center. The win improves the Saxons to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in Empire 8 action, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in conference.
In the beginning of the game the Soaring Eagles got off to a quick start taking the early lead and maintaining the lead for the first six minutes. However, the Saxons were able to get on top six minutes in and control the tempo for the rest of the game. Both teams battled on the offensive side, but Alfred was continued to pressure and make easy baskets stretching out their lead to as many as nine points with two minutes left in the first half. EC was able to cut into the lead with
Brian McDonald '15 making some key buckets and bring it to 35-30 at halftime in favor of Alfred.
In the second half Alfred continued to control the tempo even with EC battling back several times. EC was able to tie up the game twice and take over the lead twice in the half, but the Saxons continued to score and eventually seal off the game 68-64.
Chris Cassidy '14 and
Kurt Dutcher '14 had stellar performances once again for the Purple and Gold.
Cassidy went 6-of-9 from the field contributing 16 points, eight boards, two assists, a block and a steal.
Dutcher shot 50 percent from the field contributing 15 points, four boards and two steals. EC was able to dominate Alfred in second chance points (10-2) and free throw shooting percentage (75%). The Saxons were able to dominate in points off turnovers (13-7) and bench points (36-19).
The EC Men's Basketball team will return to action this Friday, January 11th to face Nazareth College in a conference showdown. Tip-off will be at 6:00 p.m.
