Elmira, NY -- It took an extra eight-plus minutes of action, but the Elmira College men's soccer team (6-6) continued their winning ways as they defeated SUNY Canton 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.
Michael Bryant '17 scored the game-winner with 1:32 left in the first overtime period.
The Soaring Eagles got out to a quick start in the first half as they got on the scoreboard just over nine minutes into the game.
Michael Girard '17 played a long ball into the 18-yard box where
Brian Lowe '16 ran over and gathered it. Lowe took one touch and fired a low, hard shot at the net that skipped past the Canton keeper. Both teams had a few other chances in the half, but neither could convert as EC took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half remained a one-goal game for nearly the entire 45 minutes until the Roos were awarded a free kick in their offensive half with just under a minute to play. With everybody in, including the goalie, Nick Escalante sent the free kick into the box where many of his teammates were jockeying for position. Tyler Gallagher's header was touched by a diving
Jordan Dougherty '16, but the ball did not deflect far enough as it rolled into the back of the net and tied the game at one. Elmira nearly scored the go ahead goal with just a few seconds left, but the horn sounded and sent the game into overtime.
The overtime period was dominated by the Purple and Gold as the ball was within their attacking area for most of the eight-plus minutes of play. After the Roos cleared an Elmira corner kick,
Logan Chappell '14 sent the ball back into the box.
Andre Germano '15 flicked a header into the middle of the box where Bryant came in and finished the shot into the lower-left corner of the goal.
Dougherty made 10 saves in his second straight start while Roos keeper, Evan Drew, made five saves on the afternoon.
The Soaring Eagles will look to push both their season and their conference records over .500 this Saturday, October 19th when they host Empire 8 foe, Stevens Tech, for a 1:00 p.m. game.
