Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's soccer team (4-5, 1-2 E8) had their scoring chances against St. John Fisher College (3-6-1, 1-2 E8) this afternoon, but they failed to capitalize on their opportunities as they fell 1-0 to the visiting Cardinals.Â
The two teams played a fairly even first half as the stats across the board were almost identical, leading to a 0-0 tie at halftime. Fisher outshot EC 8-6, but Elmira's
Nick Lapinski '17 made five of his six saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
After halftime, the intensity of the game picked up. The Soaring Eagles had a few opportunities early on that would have given them the lead, however, they were unable to punch the ball into the back of the net. The Cardinals took advantage of the situation and broke the tie in the 69th minute off of a header from Chris Ferrara.
Michael Bryant '17 had a header of his own that would have tied the score, but it missed just wide of the post. EC kept pressing for a late goal, but it did not come as the final whistle sounded with St. John Fisher holding on for the 1-0 win.
In recognition and to give thanks of their continued support, the EC men's soccer team ran out with the local U-12 Soaring Capital Soccer Club team, the Soaring Capital Cyclones, during the starting lineups today.
The Soaring Eagles have a tough test in front of them as they take on the University of Scranton at home on Tuesday, October 8th in a non-conference matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
