Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (3-4-0) regained their scoring touch as the Soaring Eagles took down Fredonia State (2-4-0), 5-0, in Tuesday night's non-conference game. The win snaps EC's two-game losing streak and gives the Purple and Gold their first shutout victory of the season.
Sal Magliocco '17 made 28 saves between the pipes for his first career shutout.
The Soaring Eagles got off to a quick start as
Jesper Strale '14 found the back of the net just 1:46 into the first period. Strale would take passes from
Max Balaban '16 and
Andrew Ciampichini '15 before wrapping behind the net and firing a shot that ricocheted off the skate of a Fredonia defenseman and past the Blue Devils goalie, Chris Eiserman.
For most of the rest of the first period, the two teams played fairly even, but the Purple and Gold would strike again with just over a minute to play as newcomer,
Nick Owen '17, would reward Coach Saul for dressing him tonight. Owen received a pass from
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 and fired a shot from the point that beat Eiserman.
Josh Burnell'15 was also credited with an assist on the play. The Soaring Eagles would take the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The first half of the second period was scoreless as both goalies made impressive saves for their respective teams. The scoreless streak would end, however, with 8:35 on the clock when another EC newcomer would tally his first career goal.
Eddie Nolan '17, who was waiting in the slot, received a pass from fellow defenseman Erik Ericksson '16, and fired a shot towards the net. Nolan's shot slipped through the five-hole of Eiserman and hit the back of the net, ending Eiserman's night between the pipes. Ciampichini would also pick up his second assist of the night on the goal. The 3-0 lead would stand as the second period came to a close.
The second-ranked power play unit in the country made itself known in the third period after coming up empty on EC's first two power play opportunities. As the seconds ticked down on the man-up advantage, the Elmira skaters put together a series of nice passes as the puck moved around the ice until it found the stick of
Greg Whittle '16 camping out in the middle of the zone. Whittle took the pass and fired a backhanded shot over the glove of new Fredonia goalie, Jeff Flagler, for Elmira's fourth goal of the night.
Tommy Sumi '16 and
Eric David '15 were credited with assists on the power play goal.
The final goal of the night came with just under 10 minutes to play as
Michael Collins '16 found Burnell off the side of the goal with no defender in sight. Burnell made a nice move to make Flagler commit and finished into the open net. ten Vaanholt picked up his second assist of the game on Burnell's team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The men's hockey team will look to ride this offensive explosion into their next game, this Friday, November 22nd when they travel to Pittsford, NY to take on ECAC West foe, Nazareth College. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
