Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College men's hockey team fought back from an early 2-0 deficit but could not catch Manhattanville College as they were defeated by the Valiants 4-2 Saturday night.
Sal Magliocco '17 made 37 saves in his second career start.
The Soaring Eagles continued their physical play from the night before but the officials were quick with the whistle as there were a total of 10 penalties called in the opening period. The Purple and Gold were whistled for a major penalty which put Manhattanville on a five minute power play. The Valiants capitalized on their opportunity with back-to-back goals separated by only 35 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. The Soaring Eagles regrouped after the goals to put some shots on net but they could not get a goal on the board in the first 20 minutes.
The second period was a reverse of fortunes for Elmira College as the men started to settle into the rhythm of the game. The Soaring Eagles cut the deficit to one with 5:43 to play in the second period when
Taylor Love '16 rocketed a slap shot past the Manhattanville goaltender.
Jarryd ten Vaanholt'16 picked up an assist on the play.
At the 1:57 mark, Manhattanville was whistled for a roughing penalty which put EC on the power play. After getting set into their power play, the trio of
Max Balaban '16,
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16, and
Josh Burnell '15 played a little tic tac toe with each other as the puck zig-zagged from one side of the ice to the other. The puck found Burnell's stick as he fired a one-timer into the back of the net. The Soaring Eagles and Valiants would enter the second intermission tied 2-2.
Manhattanville struck almost immediately in the third period to regain the lead and take back the momentum. Elmira attempted to score the equalizer but Brian Fleming kept the Soaring Eagles off the board in the third period. The Valiants added a fourth goal with 5:07 to play that all but put the game out of reach.
The Soaring Eagles will get back on the ice next Friday, November 8th when they travel to Utica, NY to take on Utica College. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
