Northfield, VT -- After trailing for nearly 48 minutes of play, the Elmira College women's ice hockey team (0-0-1) skated away with a 2-2 overtime tie against number nine nationally ranked Manhattanville College (0-0-1). Midway through the third period, Elmira's
Cassidy Delainey '15 would score two goals in less than one minute to lead EC to the tie.
Today's 2-2 OT tie marks the second consecutive year that the Soaring Eagles have opened the season with a tie. More so, it is the second year in a row that EC has opened the season with a tie at the East-West Classic, the nation's premier NCAA Division III ice hockey tournament.
Elmira held a 12-to-8 advantage in shots in the first period but it would be the Valiants of Manhattanville who would make the most of their chances as they scored on a power play opportunity at the 16:13 mark. Manhattanville would carry the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
There was minimal offense in the second period as both teams combined for seven shots total, four for Manhattanville and three for Elmira. EC had four power play opportunities in the period but were unable to convert on any of their chances. However, the EC defense would hold strong in the period as they kept the Manhattanville offense scoreless as the Soaring Eagles entered the second intermission with a 1-0 deficit.
Eager to create separation, the Valiants tallied their second goal of the game just 27 seconds into the third period, taking a 2-0 lead.
Then, Elmira began to make their comeback, starting with a power play goal by
Cassidy Delainey '15 at the 7:44 mark in the final period of regulation. EC's
Ashley Ryan '15 and
Tanis Lamoureux '14 would be credited with assists on the Purple and Gold's first goal of the season.
Less than one minute later, Delainey would deliver again for the Soaring Eagles as she tied the game at two apiece. Classmates
Jocelynne Hudgins '14 and
Ella Stewart '14 recorded assists on the game tying goal.
From there, neither team would find the back of the net as regulation came to a close with the score even at 2-2.
It looked as though the Soaring Eagles would breakthrough for the game winner in the overtime period as they outshot the Valiants 5-to-1. However, neither team was able to deliver the final blow as the five minute overtime period ended, resulting in a 2-2 OT tie.
Elmira's
Lisa Marshall '14 got her first start in net since February 2, 2013. The Virginia native would make 21 saves in her season debut.
The Soaring Eagles will be on short rest as they prepare to take on number five nationally ranked Norwich University tomorrow, November 3rd. The puck is set to drop at 4:00 p.m. in Northfield, VT.
