Northfield, VT -- The Elmira College women's ice hockey team (0-1-1) scored the first and final goals of today's game but host #5 Norwich University (1-1-0) would come out on top as the Soaring Eagles fell on the road, 3-2. Elmira's special teams were unable to convert on any of their chances today as the Purple and Gold went 0-for-9 on power play opportunities.
At the conclusion of today's game, the East-West Classic All-Tournament Team was announced with EC's
Cassidy Delainey '15 receiving recognition for her play this weekend. Delainey completed the weekend with three points on two goals, including yesterday's game-tying goal, and an assist.
It only took EC 33 seconds into regulation to put the game's first goal on the scoreboard. Elmira's
Ashton Hogan '15 delivered the opening goal as she cut across into the slot, backhanding a shot to beat the Norwich goaltender on the glove side. Delainey and
Jocelynne Hudgins '15 were credited with assists on the goal.
The Cadets of Norwich responded with three unanswered goals in the first period to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Norwich's third, and eventual game winning goal, was somewhat controversial as the shot never seemed to cross the goal line as the shot ricocheted off the top bar of the goal. However, the official was right on top of the shot and immediately signaled for the goal.
Elmira cut the Norwich lead to 3-2 in the second period as captain
Tanis Lamoureux '14 used some crafty stick work to beat the Cadet netminder for the score.
Ashley Ryan '15 and
Erin Weston '15 both earned assists on the goal, which would be the only score of the second period.
Trailing by one, the Soaring Eagles knew they would need to up the pressure in the third period, and that they did as EC outshot Norwich 9-to-2 in the final period of regulation. Elmira also had four power play opportunities in the third, but no goals came of it as Norwich kept the Soaring Eagles' offense scoreless for the entire period en route to the 3-2 result.
EC's
Lisa Marshall '14 got the start in net today as she made 16 saves in 59 minutes of action.
Elmira will have about week before their next contest as EC prepares for their home opener against ECAC West Conference opponent Utica College on Saturday, November 9th. The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.
