Utica, NY -- Despite scoring three power play goals, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team (1-2-0, 1-2-0 ECAC West) fell on the road to the fifth ranked team in the nation, Utica College(3-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC West), 4-3. Elmira scored two third period goals but it was not enough as the Pioneers of Utica kept the Soaring Eagles off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period.
The Elmira defense was under fire for most of today's game as Utica outshot Elmira 37-to-28. Utica also had nine power play opportunities tonight but the Soaring Eagles were able to kill all nine chances to keep today's game within grasp.
Elmira fell into an early hole as the Pioneers found the back of the net in the first 50 seconds of the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. The Soaring Eagles did not do themselves any favors as they picked up six first period penalties, giving Utica six power play opportunities. However, the EC defense held strong as they successfully fended off each Utica opportunity, as the Purple and Gold entered the first intermission with a 1-0 deficit.
In the second period, Elmira evened things up as they made good on a power play opportunity of their own at the 7:06 mark.
Josh Burnell '15 scored the power play goal for the Soaring Eagles, his second straight game scoring a goal. Picking up assists on the Burnell score was
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 and
Tommy Sumi '16.
The second period seemed to be coming to a close with things even at one apiece but the Pioneers scored two goals, including one short-handed goal, in the final 1:34 of the period to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
Elmira responded quickly as last year's leading goal scorer,
Carter Shinkaruk '16, scored a power play goal just 1:15 into the third period.
Liam Burtt '16 and
Jesper Strale '14 were credited assists on the goal.
Then, in a six minute span, Utica and Elmira would trade goals, bringing the game to a 4-3 standstill.
Brian Depp '16 scored EC's third power play goal of the night to cut the lead back to one, while Shinkaruk and Burtt earned assists.
Unfortunately, Depp's goal would be the final of the score of the night as the Soaring Eagles fell to the Pioneers, 4-3. EC goalie
Sal Magliocco '17 got his third start of the season today as he made 33 saves in 58:42 minutes of action.
The Soaring Eagles will have less than 24 hours to get ready for their next opponent as they host Nazareth College in an ECAC West battle, tomorrow, November 9th. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY. Fans are encouraged to wear white to tomorrow's game for EC's 2013-14 White Out Game.
