New York, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team split a pair of matches against two Top 15 opponents Saturday at the Baruch Tournament in New York City. The Soaring Eagles swept No. 15 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21), before falling to host No. 9 Baruch, 3-1 (17-25, 27-25, 11-25, 19-25). With the split the Soaring Eagles move to 9-6 on the season.
EC looked sharp in its first match against the Engineers as the Purple and Gold combined for 33 kills and just 11 errors.
Erik Griffin '16 finished with nine kills, five digs and four blocks while hitting .318.
Ryan Gelenitis '14 added eight kills, eight digs and recorded a .316 hitting percentage.
Michael Vellutato '14 was the catalyst offensively finishing with 30 assists and five digs, while
Mike Ellison '16 registered four kills, seven digs and two blocks.
Elmira struggled more in its second match of the day as it tallied at least eight errors in all four sets against Baruch. The Soaring Eagles finished the second set strong to take that frame, 27-25, but other than that the Bearcats controlled the match.
Gelenitis led EC with 12 kills, eight digs and two blocks, while
Griffin added nine kills and nine digs.
Ellison chipped in with nine kills and three digs and
Rob Shade '15 tallied eight digs.
Vellutato finished with a match-high 35 assists to go along with seven digs.
The Men's Volleyball team returns to action tomorrow in the second day of the Baruch Tournament when it takes on No. 12 Stevenson at 10:00 a.m. before squaring off with Emmanuel at 12:00 p.m.
