New York, NY – The No. 11 Men's Volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the second day of the Baruch Tournament on Sunday in New York City. The Soaring Eagles fell to No. 12 Stevenson, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21), before dropping a 3-1 match (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 18-25) to Emmanuel. The losses drop Elmira to 9-8 overall on the season.
Over the weekend classmates
Michael Vellutato '14 and
Ryan Gelenitis '14 both hit career milestones in their third seasons in the Purple and Gold.
Vellutato, who tallied 141 assists this weekend, now has 3,088 career helpers.
Gelelnitis, who recorded 42 kills at the Baruch Tournament, now has 1,021 kills for Elmira.
The Purple and Gold struggled early on against Stevenson with its hitting percentage which proved to be costly in the match. EC finished with 33 kills and 22 errors and hit just .101 as a team in the three set sweep.
Gelenitis tallied a team-high nine kills along with 12 digs.
Rob Shade '15 had a big match recording a career-high 18 digs, while
Vellutato dished out 30 assists and tallied four digs.
Dylan Kuhn '16 and
Tyler Smith '15 were productive finishing with six kills apiece, while
Kuhn hit a team-best .600.
Elmira played much better in its second match of the day combining for 49 kills and just 19 errors which led to a .254 hitting percentage but it was not enough as the team came across a hot-hitting Emmanuel squad.
Gelenitis paced EC with 13 kills and seven digs, while
Erik Griffin '16 tallied 12 kills and seven digs with an accurate .476 hitting percentage.
Shade continued his remarkable defensive play with 16 digs and
Vellutato was the catalyst with 46 assists and nine digs.
