Balanced Attack Leads Elmira to Sweep over Hilbert

Hamburg, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to sweep Hilbert, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17-25-20), Wednesday evening on the road. The win improves the No. 15 Soaring Eagles to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in United Volleyball play, while the loss drops the Hawks to 4-12 and 1-6.

Although the score was close in the first set Elmira dictated play nearly doubling up Hilbert in kills, 13-7. EC controlled the second set as they held the Hawks to just four kills and forced them to commit six errors. Meanwhile, the Purple and Gold finished with 10 kills, only two errors and a .308 hitting percentage. The final set was fairly even as both teams floored 12 kills, but EC proved to be the stronger team closing out the match, 25-20.

Tyler Smith '15 led Elmira with eight kills and five digs, while classmates Mike Ellison '16 and Andrew Johnson '16 recorded seven kills apiece. Austin Sanderl '15 added six kills and Evan Clarke '15 was strong defensively with a match and career high 19 digs. Michael Vellutato '14 was the catalyst dishing out a match-high 30 assists.  

The Men's Volleyball team returns to action Saturday when it travels to Pittsford, NY to take part in the Nazareth College Quad Match. EC takes on Milwaukee School of Engineering at 3:00 p.m. before squaring off with Penn State Altoona at 5:30 p.m.
