Pittsford, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team continued its impressive play, winning both of its matches on Sunday at the Golden Flyer Invitational, while knocking off another ranked opponent. The Soaring Eagles defeated Southern Vermont 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-8, 25-16) before ousting No. 11 Medaille 3-2 (27-25, 22-25, 16-25, 34-32, 15-8). With the wins EC now improves to 5-2 on the season, as they have won five consecutive matches.
After committing seven hitting errors and falling 25-23 in the opening set, Elmira cruised winning three consecutive sets against Southern Vermont. The Soaring Eagles hit no worse than .500 in the last three frames as the team combined for a remarkable 44 kills and committed just seven errors.
Ryan Gelenitis '14 and
Mike Ellison '16 finished with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Michael Vellutato '14 tallied a double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs to go along with four blocks. Meanwhile,
Evan Clarke '15 recorded eight digs and
Dylan Kuhn '16 finished with nine kills.
EC's second match of the day proved to be a thriller that saw two sets go into extra points with Elmira prevailing in both. The Soaring Eagles took the first set 27-25 hitting .235. Medaille responded with a 25-22 second set win where Elmira tallied as many errors (9) as kills (9). The Mavericks outhit EC in kills (16-6) as they took the third set, 25-16. The Purple and Gold showed their mental toughness gritting out an incredible, 34-32, victory in the fourth to force a decisive fifth set. Elmira used its momentum to dominate taking the fifth frame, 15-8.
Four different Soaring Eagles tallied double digit kills as
Ellison (14),
Gelenitis (12),
Erik Grififn '16 (11) and
Kuhn (10) all accomplished the feat.
Ellison and
Gelenitis added 10 and eight digs, respectively, while
Rob Shade '15 finished with 10 digs.
Kuhn was a force at net finishing with four of Elmira's 15 team blocks.
Vellutato proved to be the floor general once again dishing out 42 assists to go with six digs and three blocks.
The Men's Volleyball team returns to action Saturday when it takes part in a United Volleyball Crossover weekend. Elmira takes on SUNY New Paltz at 11:00 a.m. and Stevens Institute of Technology at 5:00 p.m.
