Hoboken, NJ – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team fell behind early and couldn't complete a comeback as it fell, 60-47, Friday evening in Canavan Arena.
Jessica Zoltowski '14 finished with 16 points in the contest as she eclipsed the 1,000 point career scoring mark. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in Empire 8 play, while the win improves the Ducks to 12-10 and 6-5.
Elmira led 13-10 with 11 minutes remaining in the opening half, but the Ducks closed the stanza on a 21-3 run to take a 31-16 lead into intermission. EC shot just 26 percent from the field compared to Stevens converting on 44 percent of its shot attempts.
The Purple and Gold got the score within eight at 45-37 midway through the second half after a
Zoltowski layup, but that was as close as they would get. The Ducks extended their lead to as many as 16 points on multiple occasions before holding on for the 13 point victory.
Zoltowski tied a game-high with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting adding six rebounds and four steals. With the 16 points
Zoltowski becomes just the fourth player in Elmira College Women's Basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 point scoring mark. She now has 1,014 points in her three years so far at EC.
Alex Balara '15 chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Miranda Ripken led the Ducks with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Avis Benjamin tallied 15 points and seven rebounds. Stevens held advantages in points in the paint (18-4) and bench points (11-4), while the Soaring Eagles held a 14-8 edge in second chance points.
The EC Women's Basketball team returns to action tomorrow when it travels to take on Hartwick College starting at 4:00 p.m.
