Oneonta, NY – It was a tale of two halves for the Elmira College Women's Basketball team as it fell to host Hartwick, 60-52, Saturday evening. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 8-15 overall and 3-9 in Empire 8 play, while the win improves the Hawks to 17-6 and 9-3.
Hartwick got out to a quick 12-6 start early on its home court, but Elmira used an11-5 run to tie the game at 17 apiece with 6:35 left in the first half. After a
Samantha Strzepek '15 trey a minute later the Soaring Eagles regained the lead. EC closed the stanza on a 12-4 spurt to take a commanding, 32-24, lead into break.
Elmira shot 60 percent from the floor (12-for-20) and 75 percent from long distance (3-for-4) in the opening 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Hawks converted just 35 percent of their field goal attempts.
Early on in the second half Hartwick trimmed away at EC's lead getting within 41-35 seven minutes into the half. Over a four-minute span 'Wick used a 7-0 run to regain a one point lead at 42-41 with 9:31 to play.
Over the next five minutes the two teams played back-and-forth with two ties and six lead changes before the Hawks took the lead for good at 49-48 with 4:17 on the clock. 'Wick closed the game on an 11-4 run that included some strong free throw shooting and seven points from Maria Foglia to hold off Elmira down the stretch.
The Soaring Eagles finished with three scorers in double figures led by 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists from
Jessica Zoltowski '14.
Maria Thannhauser '14 and
Alex Balara '15 tallied 11 points and three assists apiece while combing to haul in nine boards.
Foglia led all scorers with 24 points, while Brittney Dumas and Kate Purcell chipped in 16 and 11 points, respectively. Elmira committed eight turnovers in the second half, compared to just three for the hosts. The Hawks held a 20-14 points in the paint edge, while EC had a 16-7 advantage in bench points.
The Women's Basketball team returns to the hardwood Friday when it travels to take on Nazareth College starting at 6:00 p.m.
