New Paltz, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the United Volleyball Crossover with a 3-1 (15-25, 25-21, 21-25, 19-25) loss to No. 12 Vassar College and a 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-14) sweep of Bard, on Sunday in New Paltz. The split moves the No. 15 Soaring Eagles to 14-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
EC ran into a hot-hitting Vassar squad as the Brewers hit .313 as a team including a sizzling .583 in the opening set. The Purple and Gold played better in the second frame finishing with 14 kills in a 25-21 victory. Both squads floored 12 kills in the third set but Vassar edged out Elmira, 25-21.  The Soaring Eagles hit less than .100 in the final stanza as the Brewers closed out the match, 25-19.
Ryan Gelenitis '14 (Brick, NJ -- Christian Brothers Academy) paced Elmira with 14 kills, seven digs and two service aces, while 
Erik Griffin '16 (Victor, NY -- Victor) added 13 kills, five digs and two aces. 
Ryan Nerney '14 (Niskayuna, NY -- Niskayuna) floored nine kills and 
Rob Shade '15 (West Irondequoit, NY -- West Irondequoit) and 
Mike Ellison '16 (Victor, NY -- Victor) combined for 23 digs. 
Michael Vellutato '14 (Topanga, CA -- Redondo Union) was the catalyst offensively dishing out 37 assists. 
The Purple and Gold gritted out a first set, 28-26, victory against Bard as both teams struggled with their hitting percentages converting on less than .100 of their attack attempts. However, Elmira cruised to second and third set wins behind 23 kills and just seven errors as it hit no lower than .316 in those frames.
Griffin paced EC with nine kills, six digs and three blocks, while 
Dylan Kuhn '16 (Fairport, NY – Fairport) registered seven kills and three blocks hitting .417
. Evan Clarke '15 (Rochester, NY – Chili-Churchville) finished with a match-high nine digs and 
Vellutato set up a match-best 30 kills.
The Men's Volleyball team has 10 days off before returning to action March 20th when it travels to Buffalo, NY to take on current No. 8 Medaille College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
