Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Pair of Opponents at Nazareth

Pittsford, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team used a strong performance to sweep both the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-23), and Penn State Altoona, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-22), Saturday at the Nazareth Tournament. With the wins the No. 15 Soaring Eagles improve to 12-8 on the season.

Elmira combined for 44 kills and 22 errors, while hitting .256 against MSOE. Meanwhile, the Engineers were able to hit .333 on 36 kills and 11 errors, but EC edged its opponent on the scoreboard in each set. Ryan Gelenitis '14 and Erik Griffin '16 led the Soaring Eagle attack with 12 kills apiece while Chris Pierantoni '15 notched eight kills. Michael Vellutato '14 dished out a match-high 42 assists along with seven digs.

The Purple and Gold used another balanced attack to down Altoona in its second match of the day. Elmira nearly doubled up the Nittany Lions in kills 48-27, and outhit Altoona .292 to .138. Mike Ellison '16 tallied a career and match high 15 kills while hitting .520. Tyler Smith '16 recorded 13 kills and Rob Shade '15 registered 21 digs. Vellutato set up 44 kills in the match.

The Men's Volleyball team returns to action next weekend when it takes part in the second United Volleyball Crossover Weekend hosted by SUNY New Paltz.
