Buffalo, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team started off strong, but dropped three straight sets as it fell, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 16-25), Wednesday evening to host Medaille College. The win improves the No. 12 Mavericks to 15-14 overall and 7-4 in United Volleyball Conference play, while the loss drops the No. 13 Soaring Eagles to 14-10 and 6-5.

Elmira nipped host Medaille in the open set, 25-23. The Purple and Gold finished with 14 kills to just four errors for a .294 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, the Mavericks tallied 13 kills but committed nine errors and hit just .129.

The second frame was another close set as Medaille prevailed late, 25-22. The Mavericks registered 14 kills compared to 12 for Elmira.  Both squads saw four mishits leading to errors in the set as the match was tied at 1-1.

Medaille played much stronger in the third set as they finished with 15 kills and just four errors. EC struggled a bit offensively finishing with 10 kills and six errors. The Mavericks used the momentum gained during the third set to close out the Soaring Eagles in the fourth set, 25-16. The Purple and Gold floored seven kills but committed a match-high 10 errors. Medaille finished with nine kills and four errors to close out the match.

Ryan Gelenitis '14 was the only Elmira player to finish in double digit kills as he tallied 15, while Mike Ellison '16 added eight.  Michael Vellutato '14 dished out 38 assists and added nine digs, while Rob Shade '15 finished with 13 digs.

The Men's Volleyball team returns to action Sunday at the Mount Saint Vincent Quad-Match.
