Riverdale, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team picked up two victories and fell once in three matches at the Mount Saint Vincent Quad Match on Sunday afternoon.
The Soaring Eagles swept the hosts, 3-0 (25-17, 25-6, 25-21) and defeated Cazenovia in straight sets, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-7) before falling to No. 8 Baruch 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 25-27, 14-16). EC now moves to 16-11 overall on the season.
Elmira had a strong team performance in its opening match against the hosts from Mount Saint Vincent. EC finished with at least 10 kills in each set, while the Dolphins combined for just 15 kills in the entire match.
Mike Ellison '16 led the way for the Purple and Gold with eight kills, four digs and three blocks along with a .412 hitting percentage.
Dylan Kuhn '16 added seven kills on a 4.29 hitting percentage with three blocks, while E
rik Griffin '16 floored six kills on .455 hitting.
Michael Vellutato '14 dished out a match-high 32 assists along with three blocks and
Rob Shade '15 recorded 10 digs.
In its second match of the day the Soaring Eagles completely outmatched the Wildcats as they cruised to victory. Elmira combined for 34 kills and just four errors hitting .526 as a team, while Cazenovia produced just five kills in the match.
Austin Sanderl '15 led the EC attack with eight kills, while
Andrew Johnson '16 and
Chris Pierantoni '15 recorded seven and six kills, respectively.
Vellutato once again led the team with 23 assists.
The Soaring Eagles played a thriller in their final match of the day. Elmira took the opening set 25-21 behind 16 kills and just four errors. Baruch bounced back with a 25-20 second set win as they hit a blistering .414. EC battled tough with 19 kills in a third set, 25-23, victory. Despite playing great volleyball the Purple and Gold got nipped in the final two sets, 27-25 and 16-14, as Baruch prevailed.
Griffin paced Elmira with 20 kills, six digs and two blocks.
Ryan Nerney '14 finished with 14 kills and
Kuhn and
Ryan Gelenitis '14 each pounded out 13 kills apiece.
Gelenitis added 17 digs, while
Ellison contributed nine kills and 11 digs.
Vellutato finished with a remarkable double-double tallying 63 assists and 21 digs, while
Shade added 22 digs. The 63 assists are a career high for
Vellutato and the most in Elmira College's three-year history.
Vellutato was named the Most Valuable Player of the Quad Tournament as well as the Best Blocker.

Griffin and
Gelenitis all earned a spot on the All-Quad Team.
