Men’s Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Nazareth in Straight Sets

Clifton Springs, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team lost standout setter Michael Vellutato '14 to an injury in the first set and fell to No. 1 Nazareth College, 3-0 (17-25, 22-25, 24-26), Wednesday evening at Midlakes High School. The win improves the undefeated Golden Flyers to 28-0, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 16-12.

EC struggled in the opening set with just seven kills and eight hitting errors as Naz cruised early on. The second frame was much closer as the Purple and Gold finished off 12 kills and committed only five errors in a 25-22 loss. In the third frame Elmira tallied 13 kills and seven errors narrowly falling, 26-24.

Erik Griffin '16 led the team with 10 kills, four digs and two blocks, while Ryan Gelenitis '14 added eight kills, four digs and two blocks, but committed 10 errors. Rob Shade '15 registered 12 digs and Tyler Smith '15 filled in admirably at setter dishing out 19 assists to go with three digs and a team-best .500 hitting percentage.

The Men's Volleyball team returns to action Saturday when it hosts its final regular season home match against Penn State Altoona at 3:00 p.m. in Speidel Gymnasium.
