Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Altoona in Regular Season Home Finale

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Volleyball team used a strong team performance to sweep visiting Penn State Altoona, 3-0 (25-5, 25-15, 25-23), Saturday afternoon in Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the No. 13 Soaring Eagles to 17-12, while the loss drops the Lions to 7-21.

Elmira got off to a great start in the first set hitting .450 as a team on 10 kills and only one error as they dominated to the tune of a 25-5 victory. The Purple and Gold continued their strong play with 10 kills and only two errors in set number two. EC closed out the match 25-23 despite hitting just .176 in the final frame.

The Soaring Eagles received strong performances from Mike Ellison '16, Ryan Nerney '14 and Andrew Johnson '16. Ellison finished with nine kills hitting .375 and added three digs. Meanwhile, Nerney had a phenomenal match recording eight kills and four blocks while hitting .800. Johnson hit .500 on seven kills in the match and Tyler Smith '15 dished out a match-high 32 assists to go with three digs and three blocks. Ryan Gelenitis '14 paced the team with five service aces.

The Men's Volleyball team returns to action next weekend at the MIT Tournament in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
