Pittsford, NY – The EC Men's Volleyball team was down two sets and just fell short of completing the comeback, 3-2 (25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 15-3) against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in the Quarterfinal round of the UVC Championships hosted by Nazareth College. The Ducks improve to 24-8 overall, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 19-15 on the season.
The first two sets were controlled by the Ducks as they were able to take advantage of their offensive opportunities. However, the Soaring Eagles started to dig in during the third and fourth sets to put much pressure the Ducks. In the end the final set Stevens stepped up their play to another level to pull out the victory.
UVC award winners
Erik Griffin '16 and
Michael Vellutato '14 led the Soaring Eagle offense.
Griffin was stellar from the floor pounding out 16 kills and recording four digs.
Vellutato put up 39 assists, while recording 11 digs and two assisted blocks.
Mike Ellison '16, Dylan Kuhn '16 and
Ryan Nerney '14 also played well for the young EC squad.
Ellison registered six kills, three digs and two assisted blocks.
Kuhn recorded five kills and four assisted blocks, while
Nerney recorded eight kills, one solo block and four assisted blocks.
The EC Men's Volleyball team will now await the NCAA Division III Selection Show to see if it can earn an at-large bid into the postseason tournament.
