Cambridge, MA – The Men's Volleyball team fell in two matches against nationally-ranked opponents including the best team in the nation Saturday at the MIT Tournament. The No. 14 Soaring Eagles were swept by No. 1 Springfield, 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 22-25) before falling 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 21-25, 17-25) to No. 13 MIT. With the losses EC falls to 19-14 on the season.
Elmira struggled early against the No. 1 team in the nation as they finished with 10 kills but committed eight errors in the opening set. EC picked up its hitting percentage in the second frame (.267), but Springfield dictated the play as the Purple and Gold only had 15 total attack attempts. EC finished the third set with 11 kills but it was not enough to grab a set as they fell, 25-22.
Erik Griffin '16 was the high man finishing with nine kills and eight digs.
Mike Ellison '16 added five kills along with nine digs and
Michael Vellutato '14 dished out 23 assists.
EC continued to struggle with its hitting percentage against another tough opponent in MIT, but hung tough. The team finished with 10 kills in an opening set, 25-22, victory. The Engineers responded inching out a 27-25 second set victory. MIT capitalized on an additional 10 attack attempts to take a 25-21 third set and closed it out in the fourth, 25-17.
Griffin recorded a team-high 12 kills to go with 10 digs, while
Rob Shade '15 tallied 18 digs.
Vellutato finished with three kills on 10 attempts and added five digs and four blocks.
Vellutato also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for Elmira.
The Men's Volleyball team has a week off before taking on No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology in the United Volleyball Conference Playoffs hosted by Nazareth College. EC will take on the Ducks at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13th in Pittsford, NY.
