Women's Volleyball Splits the First Pair in the Lycoming State Invitational

The Elmira College women's volleyball team (11-5, 1-1 E8) competed in the first day of the Lycoming College Invitational today. The Soaring Eagles played the first game against Lycoming College (11-6) where they fell in three sets. The EC women then went on to play Pennsylvania College of Technology (4-10) in the second game where the Soaring Eagles won 3-0.

Elmira 0, Lycoming 3 – 20-25, 23-25, 11-25

The Purple and Gold fell to Lycoming in three sets in today's action. After losing the first set by just five points, Elmira battled back for the second set as the lead changed three different times. However, the EC women got edged out by two points to go down 0-2. Lycoming took the momentum to their advantage as they overcame Elmira by 14 points in the third set. Taryn Rumsey '14 led the Soaring Eagles with 14 kills, five digs and two assists while Sami Hanes '16 pitched in with 19 assists, 10 digs, two kills and two aces. Kierstin Derr '16 and Catherine Miller '14 contributed with a combined 22 digs, five kills, three assists and one block assist.

Elmira 3, Pennsylvania 0 – 25-8, 25-8, 25-15
The Purple and Gold were able to bounce back after getting swept by Lycoming by having a sweep of their own against Pennsylvania 3-0. In the first two sets Elmira soared past the Wildcats 25-8. Pennsylvania tried to battle back in the third set but it would not be enough as the EC women would win by 10 points. The leaders for the Soaring Eagles were once again Rumsey and Hanes. Rumsey tallied 10 kills and one dig while Hanes posted 31 assists, four aces, one dig and one kill. Amanda Blinkinsop '16 and Miller helped out by combining to get for 14 digs, nine aces and seven kills in today's win.

Elmira will play in the second day of the Lycoming College Invitational tomorrow where they are set to play Misercorida University at 10:00 a.m. and St. Mary's College of Maryland at Noon.
