Buffalo, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey (6-6-0) fell 5-4 against Buffalo State (6-7-3) on the road today.
Michael Collins '16 led the Soaring Eagles with two goals while
Ryan deMelo '15 stopped 33 shots in tonight's action.
Elmira found the scoreboard first in when Collins received a pass from
Greg Whittle '16 and
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 just 2:06 seconds into the game. EC's lead would not last long as the Bengals would respond just eight seconds later to tie the game at one a piece. The nation's best power play squad showed up tonight as the Soaring Eagles capitalized on the man-up opportunity twice in the game, the first came when
Josh Burnell '15 and
Tommy Sumi '16 sent the puck to
Eric David '15 who was able to bury the puck past Buffalo's goaltender 3:39 left in the first period. The Bengals bounced back and were able to tie the game up at 2-2 with only two seconds left in the first period. The Purple and Gold held the shot advantage in the first, 19-12.
5:03 into the second period Buffalo took their first lead of the game after Dan Turgeon '15 slipped one past deMelo. Collins found the back of the net for the second time in the game with 9:13 left in the second on the power play with the assists being credited to
Rob Simpson '16 and
Carter Shinkaruk '16. The Bengals would take the lead once again after Turgeon put in his second goal of the night 1:55 later. The Soaring Eagles would tie the game up again with 1:48 left in the second period when Shinkaruk put the puck behind Buffalo's netminder off a pass from Burnell. The Bengals held the shot advantage in the second period, 16-10.
Just 2:04 seconds into the third period Buffalo State scored the final goal of the game when Nick Berst '17 slid a shot past deMelo. Both teams tied for shots in the third period with ten apiece, with Elmira holding the slight advantage overall, 39-38.
The Soaring Eagles will return to action tomorrow, January 11
th when they take on SUNY Geneseo at home. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m.
