Aston, PA -- For the second time in as many days, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team picked up a huge ECAC West Conference win as the Soaring Eagles defeated Neumann University 7-3.
Josh Burnell '15 continued his scoring tear as he recorded his first career hat trick, one of 11 skaters to record a point on the night. The win over the Knights also pushed the Purple and Gold atop of the ECAC West standings heading into next weekend's tilt with No. 10 Utica College.
The first period was relatively quiet until the two teams exploded for three goals in the final 1:31 of the period. Neumann got on the board first, as Ryan Luiten tallied a power play goal. Burnell wasted little time evening the score as he forced a turnover in the offensive zone and finished the unassisted goal past Neumann goaltender Ben Curley just 12 seconds later. The scoring barrage continued as Burnell again found the back of the net to give EC the lead with 1:04 left on the clock in the opening period.
Carter Shinkaruk '16 and
Tommy Sumi '16 picked up assists on the goal. The Soaring Eagles would take the 2-1 lead into the second period.
Elmira's offense really got things going in the second period as EC tallied three goals to take a 5-2 advantage, while also forcing Braely Torris into net for Neumann.
Jesper Strale'14 scored the first of the three five minutes into the period after the play was set up by
Alexander Taulien '17 and
Brian Depp '16. Neumann cut EC's lead back to one about midway through the period on yet another power play goal, but again, the Soaring Eagles had an answer.
Taylor Love '16, who returned from injury last night against the Knights, recorded his second goal of the year.
Eric David '15 and
Michael Collins '16 also tallied assists on the goal. The final score of the period came from Collins, who picked up his ninth of the season. Elmira's assist leader,
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16, and
Greg Whittle '16 set up the scoring play and gave the Soaring Eagles a 5-2 lead at the end of two.
The number two power play unit in the country finally made their way into the scorebook early in the third period to give EC a four-goal advantage. Strale netted his second goal of the game after the puck was swung around by Shinkaruk and Depp. The Knights made it a 6-3 game just two minutes later, but the Soaring Eagle defense would keep Neumann's opportunities to a minimum for the rest of the game. Burnell would net a late shorthanded, empty net goal to seal his first career hat trick and the 7-3 victory.
Sal Magliocco '17 made 28 saves in net, picking up his second consecutive victory. Burnell finished the weekend with five points on five goals while Strale added three goals to his season total.
EC will return to the ice next weekend for a pair of crucial ECAC West contests against No. 10 Utica College. The first of the two will take place on Friday, January 31st at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
