Men’s Volleyball Picks Up A Pair Of Wins At The Juniata Tournament

HUNTINGDON, PA -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team (2-1) picked up a pair of wins against No. 13 Kean University (1-2) and Hunter College (0-3) to finish their opening weekend at the Juniata Tournament. The Soaring Eagles were led by Erik Griffin '16 and Michael Vellutato '14. Griffin tallied 29 kills, 16 digs, nine assists, three blocks and one ace while Vallutato posted 93 assists, 12 digs, three blocks and three kills in the two victories.

Mike Ellison '16 helped out with 23 kills, 18 digs, three aces and two assists while Ryan Gelenitis '14 posted 18 kills, six digs, two assists, one ace and one block on the day. Ryan Nerney '14 recorded 27 kills, two digs and one block in the wins as well.

Elmira 3, Kean 2 – 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11
The Purple and Gold battled in the first set as the lead was tied 11 different times. With the score tied at 22 a piece Kean called a time out. After the short break, Kean scored three straight points to take the win in the first set. In the second set EC had a 24-20 lead, but struggled to close out as they allowed three straight points. A kill by Griffin finally closed out the second set to even the sets at one apiece. Kean took the set lead after the third, 2-1, after narrowly closing out the set on top once again.  Elmira found themselves tied with Kean in the fourth set, at four a piece, until a kill by Andrew Johnson '16 put them in the lead that kept the Purple and Gold on top until end of the set, forcing a fifth set. The Soaring Eagles opened the fifth set with five straight points and closed it out 15-11.

Match Two Recap
Elmira 3, Hunter 1 – 25-16, 18-25, 25-18, 25-18

The EC men took command the first set early and when they found themselves leading Hunter 20-14, they went on a 5-2 run to close out the first set. Hunter regrouped in the second set and used a 7-2 run to tie the sets up to one apiece. Elmira took control of the game when they came out for the third set, and won the final two sets 25-18.

The Soaring Eagles will get back into action this Wednesday, January 29th, when they take on No. Medaille College in their home opener in the Purple and Gold's first United Volleyball Conference game of the season. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
