Pine Valley, NY -- With 1:14 seconds left in the overtime period,
Brian Depp '16 netted the game-winning overtime goal to give the Elmira College men's ice hockey team (12-7-0, 6-2-0 ECAC West) the 7-6 win over Utica College (10-5-4, 5-3-1).
Alexander Taulien '17 posted his first career hat trick and added an assist, breaking his single-game scoring record with four points.
Sal Magliocco '17 made 43 saves, breaking his single game saves record.
Trever Hertz '14 put the first goal of the day on the board just 35 seconds after the drop of the puck. EC answered back less than a minute later when
Eddie Nolan '17 took a one timer from the point after
Jarryd ten Vaanholt and
Rob Simpson '16 set him up. Utica took the lead once again after George Lotito '14 slipped one past Magliocco. EC tied the game up once again after
Brian Depp '16 got the puck from
Jesper Strale '14 and shot towards the goalie and the puck rebounded in the slot where
Alexander Taulien '17 had conveniently placed himself to put the puck in the open side of the net. After Taulien won a face off and put the puck on Erick David '15's stick, David was able to get a quick wrist shot off and put the puck behind the Pioneer's netminder. Utica tied the game back up, at 3-3, with 30 seconds left in the first period. Utica finished the period with a 13-10 shot advantage.
Just 3:20 into the second period,
Josh Burnell '15 and
Tommy Sumi '16 got the puck over to
Carter Shinkaruk '16 who shot the puck past the goaltender to up EC's lead to 4-3. Taulien netted his second goal of the game after David and
Taylor Love set up the play. Adam Graff '14 cut the Purple and Gold's lead to 5-4 after sliding one past Magliocco. The Pioneers outshot the Soaring Eagles 17-5 in the period.
2:40 into the third period, Depp carried the puck down below the dot, drawing the goalie out of the crease; he then quickly passed the puck over to Taulien who was able to flick the puck into the open net to complete his hat trick. Luc Boby '17 scored a goal 4:13 later to cut Elmira lead to 6-5. Adam Graff '14 netted a goal to tie the game with 53 second left in regulation. EC responded to what looked like to be a go-ahead goal seconds later, but after further discussion by the officials it was later deemed that the net had gotten loose before the goal was scored. At the end of regulation both teams were tied at 6-6, forcing an overtime period. Utica finished the period out shooting the EC men, 17-9.
Despite starting the overtime period with a 5-3 man advantage, the Soaring Eagles were unable to find the back of the net. After the Pioneers successfully killed the two-man down disadvantage, the Purple and Gold found themselves with the puck in the offensive zone.
Jesper Strale '14 passed the puck up from the goal line to
Taylor Love'16 who promptly took a slap shot from the blue line, the puck then rebounded to Depp who was able to slip the game-winning overtime goal into the net to end the game. Utica finished the game with a 49-27 shot advantage.
The Purple and Gold will compete against Utica College again tomorrow, February 1, at 7:00 p.m.
