Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team are winners of their last three matches, two of which came against Empire 8 Conference opponents. This Saturday, October 18th, the Elmira women will travel to New York, NY to compete in the Hunter Tri-Match, opening play against Hunter College at noon and concluding play against Rutgers University-Camden at 2:00 p.m.
Last Time OutThe Soaring Eagles enter Saturday's matches after earning a 3-1 win over visiting Alfred State giving Elmira three consecutive wins on their home court at Speidel Gymnasium. In the win over Alfred State,
Sami Hanes '16 logged a season-high 50 assists, just one shy of matching her career-high. Hanes' distributing efforts were apparent as three Soaring Eagles finished with double-digit kills, including
Kierstin Derr '16 who had 16 kills, the second-most of her collegiate career.
Scouting HunterThe Hawks of Hunter College own an even 13-13 overall record entering the weekend. Hunter won their last two matches by the scores of 3-0, both against City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opponents Baruch College and Lehman College. The two conference wins ups Hunter's CUNYAC record to a perfect 6-0. Playing a large role in Hunter's success this season has been 6'0" middle blocker Lucia Stosic who boasts the nation's fifth highest blocks per set at 1.31.
Scouting Rutgers-CamdenRutgers University-Camden enters the weekend with a 4-19 overall record after dropping their last 10 matches. Rutgers-Camden is led by Olivia Rowland and her team-leading 150 kills. However, her efforts on the defensive side of the ball has really set her apart this year as she boasts 84 total blocks, placing her inside the top 25 in all of NCAA Division III women's volleyball in total blocks.
All-Time SeriesSince 2002, Elmira and Hunter have faced each other five times with the Soaring Eagles owning a 4-1 edge in the series history. Elmira's only loss to Hunter dates back to the 2002 season when the Hawks edged Elmira in a five-set battle.
Elmira and Rutgers-Camden have faced each other just twice in their history, once during the regular season in 2013 and the other in the ECAC Tournament in 2012. The Soaring Eagles won both meetings.
Looking AheadFollowing Saturday's Tri-Match, the Soaring Eagles will head to Utica, NY on Saturday, October 25th to compete in the Empire 8 Conference Tri-Match. Elmira will take on St. John Fisher College at 2:30 p.m. before concluding the tri-match with a 5:00 p.m. tilt with Utica College.
