Pine Valley, NY -- Just 52 seconds into overtime, Alli Gilbert '16 brought the ball up the field and shot the ball over the Highlander netminder and into the cage to lift the Elmira College field hockey team (2-13, 1-7 E8) to a 3-2 win over Houghton College (3-13, 0-7 E8) today. Gilbert's overtime score was her third of the game while Mikayla Rebusmen '17 stopped three shots in today's win.
 
The highlanders found the scoreboard first with 3:26 left in the first half despite Elmira outshooting Houghton, 9-6.
 
The EC women evened things up 3:16 into the second half when Gilbert found the ball and ran up the left side of the field and punched it to the back of the net.  Gilbert put the Soaring Eagles into the lead with 16:30 left in the second half after bringing the ball up the field and blasting the ball into the cage. Houghton found the equalizer with just 5:47 left in regulation play. As neither team would find a go-ahead goal before the end of the second half, the game went into overtime.
 
The rest is history, as Gilbert would complete her hat trick just 52 seconds into the overtime period to give the EC women the 3-2 win.
 
Today's game marked Lauren Kirkland '15 and Kourtny Schwerdtman '15's final home game of their career.
 
Elmira will compete next on October 29th when the Purple and Gold travel to the University of Rochester. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
