Men’s Volleyball Splits A Pair At The Nazareth College Invitational

Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team (5-2, 1-0 UVC) split a pair of matches at the Nazareth College Invitational today. The Soaring Eagles started the day off strong as they swept No. 15 Medaille College (1-2, 0-1 UVC) 3-0, but then fell to Thiel College (2-2) 3-2.
 
Game One Recap
Elmira 3, Medaille 0 – 25-23, 25-23, 25-20

The EC men took on the Mavericks for the second time in three games today. In the first match up Elmira cruised to a 3-1 win while in today's game, Erik Griffin '16 and Ryan Gelenitis '14 led offensively with a combined 23 kills. Michael Vellutato '14 helped out with 32 assists in the game while Mike Ellison '16 added eight kills, three aces and two assists. Griffin and Gelenitis also led on the defensive side as well as they combined for 15 digs in the match. Dylan Kuhn '16 tallied three block assists in the win as well.

Game Two Recap
Elmira 2, Thiel 3 – 20-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19, 15-13

The Soaring Eagles saw a five-game winning streak snapped as they fell to Thiel in five sets. Despite finding themselves down 2-0, EC battled back and won the next two sets to force a fifth set. In the fifth EC was unable to complete the comeback as they fell 15-13.  Griffin led offensively in the second game of the day after posting 24 kills. Ellison and Gelenitis were also strong offensively as they tallied a combined 27 kills. Vellutato once again led in assists with 49 in the game while Rob Shade '15 led defensively with eight digs. Griffin was also solid defensively as he recorded seven digs, three solo blocks and three block assists.

The Purple and Gold will return to action tomorrow in the second day of the Nazareth College Invitation when they face No. 7 Carthage College at 10:00.
