Men’s Volleyball Sweeps At the Ramapo Tri-Match

Mahwah, NJ -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team (9-4, 2-2 UVC) picked up a pair of wins in the Ramapo Tri-Match today. The Soaring Eagles took down Brooklyn College in the first match-up today, 3-1, and then went on to defeat Ramapo College, 3-2.
 
Offensively, Erik Griffin '16 led the team in kills with 21 on the day while Mike Ellison '16 and Ryan Gelenitis '14 tallied 17 today. Michael Vellutato '14 helped out with 77 assists in the two victories.

On the defensive side, Ellison led with 20 digs while Gelenitis finished the afternoon with 15. Rob Shade '15 registered 12 digs while Andrew Johnson '16 totaled six block assists and two solo blocks on the day.

Game One Recap
Elmira 3, Brooklyn 1 – 25-13, 19-25, 25-14, 25-16
The Soaring Eagles and Brooklyn battled early and the Purple and Gold found themselves only up 10-7. Then the EC men went on a 15-6 run to take the first set. The Bull Dogs regrouped in the second set and took the set 25-19. EC then took control of the game in the third and fourth set as they finished 25-14 and 25-16, respectively.

Game Two Recap
Elmira 3, Ramapo 2 – 27-29, 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11

Ramapo looked to close the set when they were up 24-20, but struggled when Elmira put up three straight points and Roadrunners took a quick time out. After the break, EC scored two more points to take a 25-24 lead over Ramapo. Both teams would trade points as they found selves deadlocked at 27. But it would be the Roadrunners that would score two straight points to take the first set 29-27. Elmira regrouped in the next two sets as they battled Ramapo, but would take each set 25-20 to take the 2-1 set advantage. The fourth set would also be closely contested as both teams found themselves in a tie at 22. The Roadrunners would then go on a 3-1 run to tie the sets up at 2-2 and force the fifth set. The fifth set was as close as you can get until it was tied at 10-10 and the Purple and Gold refocused and went on a 5-1 run to finish the set and take the match 3-2.

Elmira will be back in action this Wednesday, February 19, when they travel to Nazareth College for a UVC match-up. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
