Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team (9-5, 2-3 UVC) fell to No. 5 Nazareth College (6-3, 5-1 UVC) 3-1 today.
Michael Vellutato '14 led the Soaring Eagles in tonight's contest with 39 assists, six digs, five aces, two kills, two solo blocks and two block assists.
The EC men found themselves tied with the Golden Flyers at nine apiece in the first set. Nazareth then scored seven straight points causing an Elmira timeout. After a quick break, Elmira chipped away at the Golden Flyers lead, but would eventually fall 25-20. In the second set, the Soaring Eagles battled with Nazareth and had a 25-24 lead, but would struggle to close out the set as the EC men gave up three straight points to drop the second straight set, 27-25. The Soaring Eagles regrouped in the third set and when both teams found themselves tied at 23 apiece, EC then scored the next two points to take the third set. The Golden Flyers then regrouped and took the fourth set, 25-15, to take the match 3-1.
Erik Griffin '16 was one of three Elmira players to tally double-digit kills as he led with 11 on the day.
Ryan Gelenitis '14 and
Andrew Johnson '16 both posted 10 kills in the loss.
Rob Shade '15 led the defensive effort in the contest with 11 digs while
Mike Ellison '16 notched in seven digs and one block assist. Griffin helped out with six digs and one block assist while
Dylan Kuhn '16 posted four block assists in the loss as well.
The Soaring Eagles will compete next in the Baruch Tournament Friday and Saturday, February 21st and 22nd. The EC men will take on host Baruch College and Rivier College on Friday before concluding tournament play against Emmanuel College on Saturday.
