New York, NY -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team (10-6, 2-3 UVC) split a pair of games in the first day of the Baruch Tournament. The Soaring Eagles started the day off with a 0-3 loss to No. 2 Rivier College (8-1) and later regrouped to sweet host No. 7 Baruch College (8-2), 3-0.
Game One Recap
Elmira 0, Rivier 3 – 24-26, 19-25, 22-25
Both teams battled in the first set as neither team led more than three points the entire set. With both teams tied at 21, the Raiders went on a 5-3 run to take the first set. In the second set the Soaring Eagles found themselves locked up at 14 apiece with Rivier. The Raiders then went on a 11-4 run to take the 2-0 set lead. The EC men regrouped in the third set and found themselves trailing Rivier by only one point, 21-22. However the Raiders would score two straight points to take the match, 3-0.
Ryan Gelenitis '14 led the Purple and Gold offensively with 10 kills while
Michael Vellutato '14 set up the attack with 30 assists. Gelenitis also led defensively with six digs while
Ryan Nerney '14 posted two blocks in the loss.
Game Two Recap
Elmira 3, Baruch 0 – 26-24, 25-20, 25-21
Despite being down 23-24 in the first set, the Soaring Eagles scored three straight points to take the first set, 26-24. With both teams tied up at 15 apiece in the second set, Elmira scored four straight points to take control of the set and proceeded to cruise to a 25-20 win. With a 23-15 lead in the third set, the Bearcats went on a 6-1 run but it would not be enough as Nerney put down the last kill to end the match with a 3-0 victory. Gelenitis, once again, led offensively with nine kills while
Mike Ellison '16 tallied seven in the win. Vellutato lent his helping hand with 28 assists while
Rob Shade '15 led defensively with 10 digs.
Andrew Johnson '16 posted three block assists and one solo block in the victory.
The Soaring Eagles will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Emmanuel College to conclude the Baruch Tournament. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
